Panthers take victory in final home game against Eagles

City College played host to College of the Siskiyous Nov. 5 for its last home game of the season, taking the win 28-21.

“Our defense played well today,” said Head Coach Dannie Walker after the game.

About 500 were in attendance to see the 14th ranked Eagles (5-3, 1-1) take on the Panthers (2-6, 0-2).

The Panthers opening drive ended at the 50-yard line after an interception by the Eagles, which gave them the ball at the 25-yard line.City College made a good defensive stand and held its opponents at mid-field on a fourth down.

After 11 plays, the Panthers scored with a 6-yard pass from sophomore Dominic Carmazzi to tight end freshman Chase Zamora. The point after touchdown was good, giving City College a 7-0 lead.

In the second quarter, College of the Siskiyous’ quarterback Levi Cox ran the ball for 6-yards giving the Eagles their first score of the game. Defensive line Dushawn McDaniel blocked the extra point attempt allowing the Panthers to keep their lead, 7-6.

Following the kickoff, City College scored its second touchdown in two plays and 34 seconds, with a 10-yardrun by freshman running back Soloman Helms.

By halftime the score was 21-12, with the Panthers in the lead.

A 27-yard field goal by Eagle’s sophomore Steven Ballard gave College of the Siskiyous’ the only points put on the board during the third quarter.

The Eagles got the ball early in the fourth after a City College punt. Cox ran for his second touchdown of the day, but after another blocked kick, the score remained tied at 21.

The Panthers’ defense held firm in the fourth quarter, causing the Eagles to go three-and-out twice, while also recovering a third-down fumble. The fumble recovery set up at 24-yard run by Devian McKinnie to put City College inside the 10-yard-line. McKinniescored the go-ahead touchdown with just 13 seconds left in the game.

With eight seconds left in the game, the Eagles had one last pass for a tie. However, Panthers defensive back Isaiah Buick came down with the interception to seal the win for City College.

“The whole team finally played together,” Walker said. “We just have to carry that into next week against American River.”

This was the first conference win for the Panthers, who face undefeated American River College Nov. 12 for the last game of the season.
