City College wrestling assistant coach Lee Kemp will speak and sign copies of his memoir at Underground Books in Oak Park Saturday, Nov. 23, from 2-4 p.m.
Kemp, a three-time world wrestling champion and former coach of the U.S. Olympic wrestling team, will talk about his career and his book, “Winning Gold.”
A member of the International Wrestling Hall of Fame, Kemp’s book is a compilation of short stories and inspirational messages. Some of the stories are about Kemp’s experiences as an athlete, along with inspiration from others who have motivated Kemp, including wrestling legend Dan Gable, who is quoted on the book jacket.
“I wrote it myself. That was important to me,” says Kemp. “I started with a blog, and I would create some of the messages from my blog, and I got such a great response from it.”

In addition to his memoir, Kemp’s story has been told in a documentary film called “Wrestled Away: The Lee Kemp Story” that was released Oct. 1. He has just become one of the Panthers’ wrestling coaches this season.
“I want to find different ways to motivate people to achieve their goals,” says Kemp. “Greatness is relative. What may be great for me may not be great for you. So we all have our own goals, and I think it’s very appropriate to be better than you were the day before. And if that translates into greatness, then that’s awesome. But if it doesn’t, at least you know yourself, you’re getting better.”
