Younger, faster, stronger

City College’s football team started the 2010 season with high hopes, new faces and new challenges.

After a summer of tough practices, and seven regular season games, the Panthers have developed a strong bond between one another and a uniform goal: to get better with every passing day.

“When you come into the season, you don’t look to lose, you’re always prepared to win,” says Panthers’ football head coach Dannie Walker. “We’re a young football team again, but we’ve got some good returners.”

About 75 percent of the team consists of freshman players, according to Walker. The rest of the team is made up of continuing players from previous semesters and some veterans who have been out a year.

“We have a pretty good team,” says freshman defensive back Kevin Walker (no relation to Dannie Walker). “I’m trying to get my confidence up, being fresh out of high school. The pace is faster, bigger receivers, bigger quarterbacks.”

According to Walker, the team’s strength is based on the unities and bonds that the team is building with some good offense and defense. However, their weakness lies within the players who are new to collegiate-level football.

“Forming and trying to mold so many personalities, that’s always a strength and a challenge for a football team,” says Dannie Walker.

The team reached a 4-3 record after defeating Feather River College by a score of 31-21 on Oct. 23 in Hughes Stadium.
“It’s coming together,” says Panthers’ free safety Ray Davis.

Though the season isn’t over yet, the team has already had surprises that have proved to be valuable to the team.

“Some individuals stand out that we didn’t expect, have come around and matured, been able to give us some depth and leadership in places we didn’t we had it. We hope that it can rub off on the younger guys,” says Dannie Walker.

After seven games, the team hopes to finish the season strong and head into the postseason.

“We want to win the rest of the games, maybe win another conference (championship),” Davis said.

Dannie Walker wishes that with continued practice and games through the remaining weeks of the season, the team will continue to build chemistry and grow together as a team.

“I hope that they can carry on from contest to contest, and learn and grow from them and make themselves a better football team,” says Dannie Walker. “We got to bring our talents from all levels and all players to make it one collective unit, to be the best that we can be.”
