T’as-ti Francais? (Got French?)

Are you looking for the chance to understand the beauty of the Eiffel Tower, the prestige of the Champs-Elysées or the gothic grandeur of the Notre Dame cathedral without setting foot on a jetliner?

The City College French Club is a great place to start.

Le Club Français as its members prefer to call it, was created to promote French culture and the understanding of French language, according to the club website. However, members don’t have to speak French to participate in weekly meetings.

Genevieve Flett, club adviser and French professor, re-established the club in ‘96, just one year before Lily Tyler, another French professor at City College, died. Tyler’s dedication to her students remained although she was losing her fight with cancer.

“She was teaching right up to two months before she passed away,” Flett says. To commemorate Tyler’s passion and dedication, Le Club Français created the Lily Tyler Foreign Language Scholarship in 2006 from the proceeds earned from selling French pastries and other treats.

“The scholarship goes to anyone who applies and meets the qualifications,” Flett says. “So far, no French students have received it, but we are hopeful. The qualifications are: Must have completed, or be enrolled in two college-level semesters of a foreign language, should show an interest in continuing with the study of foreign language and a [minimum] GPA of 3.0.”

The money also goes towards several trips and cultural events that the French Club organizes, such as off-campus trips to restaurants so that students experience authentic French cuisines.

Le Club also takes time out to reach out to the community by visiting the Little Daisies, a group of 5-year-old girl scouts.

“We talk to them about French games and French culture,” says Flett. “They learn about where France is.”

Flett’s enthusiasm for the French culture inspires and motivates club members.

“She’s really nice and she makes everything in the club seem interesting,” says Alexzandrea Joseph, a psychology major at City College and member of the French Club.

During the club’s first meeting this semester, members were greeted with an excited, “Bonjour, bienvenue! Et entrez!” (Hello, welcome! Come in) and by bright, cheerful smiles from returning members.

The French Club meets Wednesdays at noon in SC-103, located in the Student Center.“

The [membership] number varies from 12 to five, and back,” Flett says. “Sometimes for special events we have more. There are no membership requirements so people come and go. We hope to foster appreciation for the French language and culture and offer students the opportunity to speak French with other students in a non-academic environment. We also do community service projects.”
