You’re in the grocery store, starving from a long day at school and hunger pangs take over your ability to think straight. Instead of opting for chicken and rice, you grab a cheap box of macaroni n’ cheese.

However, some instructors and students think they can change this popular fast food trend.

Many students are on a tight budget, so it’s easy to assume junk food is the best financial choice. City College Nutrition Instructor Nadine Kirkpatrick thinks otherwise. She feels junk food is not the only option.

“Grab things to go that are good for you,” says Kirkpatrick.

Kirkpatrick suggests whole wheat crackers with peanut butter and yogurt as healthy alternatives that fit easily into a backpack. She also gives tips when purchasing fruits and vegetables.

“Anything in season and in bulk is going to be very inexpensive,” says Kirkpatrick.

Kirkpatrick feels students don’t have to spend a lot of money on eating healthy if they are smart about it and plan well. She also feels that a student can find ways to eat these healthy foods and still stay full.

“To keep full you need something that has protein in it, and has fiber,” says Kirkpatrick. Junk food is not the only unhealthy food that a student can consume on a regular basis.

Steven Ward is a City College student and business major who quit drinking soda.

“I stopped drinking soda, so I substituted that with orange juice,” says Ward.

Wendy Gomez is a nurse at City College and feels that there are many substitutes to make known unhealthy foods, much healthier.

“Sharp cheddar cheese, you’re going to get more flavor with less cheese,” says Gomez. Gomez thinks this would be a good substitute for macaroni cheese or even with pizza.

“There’s lots of little tricks if you’re going to do pizza, use whole wheat pizza dough.”

Gomez also mentions to be careful in switching for healthy recipes such as pizza because though a student is consuming a healthier food, the food could also be carrying an overload of useless carbohydrates.

Many college students have a wide variety of dieting habits. Justin Lockling, a City College student, whose major is undeclared, has a unique recipe for everyone as an alternative to fast food.

“It is a pizza with bananas, raisins and peanut butter all on a tortilla.” Hopefully students will be able to find healthy foods that are affordable and stick to these healthier choices as they continue their college career.
