The women’s basketball team suffered one of their worst losses this season after spending more than five second-half minutes trailing by 20 or more Jan. 21 as the aggressive Vikings took it to the Panthers on their home floor, defeating City College 71-58.

Big 8 scoring leader and Vikings’ star guard Dericka Ware put up 21 points—11 in the second half—and six assists in the game, while Panthers leading scorer Bebe Williams had just 5 points.

“She can shoot from everywhere; 10-feet behind the (three-point) line, it doesn’t matter,” said Panthers head coach Devin Engebretsen. “We just didn’t guard her.”

Forward Kendra Snowden was a bright spot for the Panthers on an otherwise dark night as she topped her season high-scoring mark with 18.

City College was in the game for much of the first half. The Vikings lead was just 3 points with two minutes to go in the opening period, but an 8-2 run by the Vikings in the final two minutes stretched the deficit to 9 by halftime.

The Panthers stayed in the game for the first 10 minutes of the second half, limiting the Viking lead to around 10, until Diablo Valley began to pull away thanks to fast-paced, athletic play on both sides of the ball. By 8:04 the Vikings lead had been stretched to 20 points at 42-62.

The Panthers would score some points in garbage time to bring the final score to a respectable margin but failed to get back in the game after the Vikings 14-0 run between 10:31 and 5:14 in the second half.

“I think when you play athletic teams you’ve got to bring it,” said Engebretsen. “You’ve got to bring energy, and focus, and concentration to play to counteract their athleticism.”
