Facebook users beware: It’s In Your Facebook time. This monthly event has patrons of the Comedy Spot both nervous and excited about Saturday nights, and for good reason. In Your Facebook is a sketch comedy routine aimed at Facebook users.
First off, the Comedy Spot is not what you would expect a comedy club to be if all that you’ve seen is from movies. It’s slightly more modern than the brick walls, small stage and brightly colored curtains of movie sets.
It’s design is pleasant with its earthen orange paint, soft lighting and relaxing music. Despite the fact that it’s located in a small nook squeezed between other businesses, it seems larger due to the divider between the front desk and stage area.
The skit begins when a performer calls an audience member onstage — which isn’t a problem considering the crowd of 30-40 people – where a projector has been rigged to show the user’s Facebook home page. Then, the fun begins.
The performer starts his skit with a little bit of stand-up comedy before quickly moving on to the main event. He calls an audience member up and starts what can only be described as mock-real life, using his chosen guest’s page as a base for hilarious sketch comedy.
From the moment the audience members go onstage, everything on their Facebook page becomes fair game.
Comedian David Haas gets the crowd going just by talking about a person’s friend status with people he or she hardly knows. People laugh and have fun as, one by one, the performers call people onstage and go to town on their Facebook pages.
Sarah Tindle, who went onstage at a previous show, described the experience as “poking fun at yourself while everyone joined in on the laugh.”
The show is forty-five minutes at most with four performers at ten minutes each. One of the performers William Stegal invited me to attend the next showing and I think I’ll take him up on that offer.
