The charity of beauty

Thinking of getting that stylish new hairdo or manicure everyone’s been talking about this semester but just don’t have the time or money?

Food for Beauty is a two-week special, offered by the City College Cosmetology Department, that provides free complimentary haircuts and manicures for anyone in exchange for donations of canned goods. Every Tuesday through Friday from 7:45 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Sept. 27 through Oct. 7 in the cosmetology building.

“It’s an ongoing business,” cosmetology professor Norma Olivarez says.

Once a semester and twice a year, the collected canned foods will be contributed to the Sacramento Food Bank on behalf of the Cosmetology Department’s charity work.

Instructors say they are confident in their students’ abilities.

“We do have a lot of confidences in our students because they’re only performing what we’re teaching,” said Olivarez. “When you learn from the best, you do become the best.”

According to Bonawitz, cosmetology students are never left unattended; instructors will supervise at all times. Clients get a consultation prior to the services so students and instructors can tend to the satisfaction of all their clients’ needs.  Appointments can be made and walk-ins are welcome.
