The Panthers baseball team lost its final home game April 29 to the Santa Rosa Junior College Bear Cubs, 12-4, under a scorching sun in Union Stadium.

The game began in a deadlock that stretched the first two innings until the Cubs drew first blood with four runs at the bottom of the third inning.

The Panthers retaliated with two runs during the fourth inning and another during the fifth. But by the time they were up to bat in the sixth, the Panther morale suffered under a score of 9-3 after the Cubs scored four additional runs.

City College pitcher Cole Brocker took the mound in the bottom of the seventh, determined to shut the Cubs down. However, the Cubs did not budge and scored two additional points by the end of the seventh inning.

But the Panthers would not lose the game without a fight— in spite of an additional run by the Cubs at the beginning of the eighth inning. City College batter Justin James connected for a solid drive on first base over the Cubs.

Following James was his teammate Patrick Armstrong, who sent James home with a line drive past the third baseman, scoring the fourth run for the Panthers. However, the inning came to an abrupt end when City College batter Sam Hedrick’s drive to the Cubs’ second baseman resulted in a double play, which tagged him and Armstrong out.

The ninth inning passed again with both teams locked in a stalemate—but despite the struggle, both teams met on the pitcher’s mound at the end of the game in a show of good sport as the final score flashed 12-4.

The Panthers are ranked #17 in Nor-Cal Regional Playoffs and will travel out to Santa Rosa Junior College May 3 for a play-in game.
