City College Observatory open to the public

Star gazing isn’t as easy an activity as it once was. To avoid star squinting and to offer a real view of our solar system, the City College Observatory opens its doors to the public the first Friday of every month at 7:30 p.m free of charge.

Ran by City College astronomy professor Liam McDaid, Open Observatory begins with a sky tour and offers those in attendance the opportunity to search the night skies with a variety of telescopes including a 0.41m Schmidt-Cassgrain Reflector.

“Depending on what we are looking at, the view is awesome,” McDaid said. “Given the crowds, I usually have plenty of things to see in the beginning.”

Located on top of Rodda Hall South the observatory can be reached only by the south eastern staircase.

“I picked the 1st Friday of the month so people would remember it easily, but they never seem to,” McDaid said.

The next Open Observatory will be held on April 1 at 7:30 p.m.  According to McDaid the observatory stays open until people start filtering out which is usually around 10 p.m. Open Observatory usually starts at 7:30 but McDaid encourages those interested in attending to view their website to double check.
