The technical side of theater production is often overlooked and under appreciated by its audience. Without it, the actors of City Theatre’s “A Servant of Two Masters” would be repeating the script on an empty stage in the jeans and tee-shirts they showed up in.

“The director is really the mom and the dad of whole thing,” says the play’s director and City College Theater Arts and Film Professor, Christine Nicholson.

“I coordinate with the costume designer, the set designer, lighting designer, sound designer in order to achieve a cohesive whole for what the whole production design looks like.”

According to author Robert Cohen, the director functions in a variety of roles at both the technical and artistic level. At the technical level the director organizes the production with scheduling, selecting the actors, and supervising
the acting. At the artistic level, the director conceptualizes the play, gives it a vision and purpose, and inspires a unique and vivid theatrical experience.

In the early stages, Nicholson gives the play a direction shown through scenery, costumes, and actors.

So while Nicholson has a concept for the world which the characters are going to inhabit, it’s up to the set designer and crew to bring that world to life.

“We are creating a world for the characters. You’re not just making a set; you are making a world,” says City College student and set designer Karyn Garnica.

“[Costumes] need to serve the needs of the script, the needs of the director, the needs of the actor to bring forth their character,” says City College instructor and costumer Nicole Sivell.

“Working in the costume department gave me a more complete picture of theatre,” says actress and seamstress Samantha Pasco. “Costumes
along with the other aspects of theatre give both the audience and the actors a much [deeper] understanding of the production.”

“Don’t take any part of theatre for granted,” Pasco adds. “I think at lot of people don’t really understand how much time and effort go into every piece of a production and how we have time constrains just like the actors do to remember their lines. We only have two weeks to build the show and it’s a humongous amount of hard work.”

City College’s “A Servant of Two Master” premieres April 24.
