Black History Month: celebration of culture

February is Black History Month, giving Sacramento residents the opportunity to walk the timeline of the local and national black community’s contributions to history.

The Sacramento region, including City College, has played host to many events to honor and raise awareness of the black community’s unity and achievements.

The California Black Caucus held a special reception Feb. 9 to honor Belva Davis, television’s first black woman reporter in the western United States. Davis read from her book,
“Never In My Wildest Dreams,” and spoke about her experiences as a black woman journalist.

The National Council of Negro Women hosted the 22nd annual Sweet Potato Festival Feb. 12. Performer Samoria Lamuse performed as legendary dancer Josephine Baker.

Milton Bowens hosted a Feb. 12 reception for his art show, “Encyclopedia Blacktannica,” at 40 Acres Art Gallery. Mayor Kevin Johnson attended the event.

Leather artist Khali K. Keyi visited the City College Cultural Awareness Center Feb. 15 and facilitated a discussion titled Mask of Identity. Keyi said he strongly feels that Black History Month should be “lived 12 months out of the year. Art is where healing takes place.”
