A Senior Moment

Register for classes, speak to a counselor, talk to a financial aid adviser, test into English and math and learn about joining a Sacramento City College club—all in one day.

Before students scream, “Where do I sign up?” this event is only open to 12th grade incoming freshman students.

However, current City College students will be able to help usher in the new group of freshman by volunteering.

Senior Saturday is an event that gives incoming high school seniors the opportunity to complete the matriculation process into City College in one day. Representatives from orientation will be present, including the dean of financial aid and Vice President of Student Services Michael Poindexter.

High school seniors have the opportunity to attend Senior Saturday on March 5, March 19 or April 2. The event will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Faculty will remain until 4:30 p.m. to help students needing extra time, according to event organizer and Outreach Specialist, Tanya Anderson.

“All Student Services will be involved to help us have a productive event,” Anderson said.

This is the second year that Senior Saturday will be held to aid incoming freshmen with their transition into future City College students. Anderson and other event organizers depend on the support of current students to aid incoming freshman.

Some of them [City College student volunteers] are also part of student government.”

This year 15 clubs are expected to a part of Senior Day. City College student Sheenal Raj contributed to Senior Day last year by volunteering and plans to do so again.

“This event benefits seniors because it’s an easy transition into college, and you can get all things done in one day,” Raj said.

“Senior Saturday is important to go to because everything is a one shot deal. You get to take your assessment tests, student orientation, learn about financial aid and become more familiar with Sac City,” said Shabrina Buksh, a student who volunteered last year.

During this event, City College clubs will have booths on the campus quad to help incoming freshman gain knowledge about extracurricular events offered on campus. This will provide clubs an opportunity to gain new members.

Last year, approximately 300 people attended Senior Day, and club booths were able to raise profits by selling food to hungry seniors and parents.
