Water polo season wrap-up; Panthers finish 2-20 on year
After a season that consisted of only two wins, City College water polo has finally come to an end, with the team improving by only one game from last years 1-15 record.
With their latest losses coming in the Big 8 tournament against Santa Rosa, Sierra, and Fresno City College, the Panthers can now look ahead to next season after finishing 2-20 on the year.
“It was a struggle to get wins,” said head coach Steve Hanson. “We still have athletes coming from programs where they don’t really have the highest of quality of programs, nor do they play year-round water polo or club teams.”
Hanson also credits the struggle due to getting players at the beginning of their knowledge of water polo. “I feel like the team has progressed quite a bit in terms of their knowledge of the game but we just started at such a disadvantage early on.”
City College finished 1-11 in September and was outscored 209-50 in those 12 games. The Panthers also allowed opponents to score 21 or more goals 4 times and allowed an average of 17 goals per game in in September.
In October and November City College played 10 games and opponents only averaged 11 goals per game against them. The team gave up a total of 112 and scored a total of 57.
“It takes a lot of learning,” Janson said whose team had a team shot just 31 percent on 15.6 shots per game. “We’re having to learn against college teams and players from different programs that have experience and are playing year round and playing on club teams.”

City College plays in the conference that features the best team in Northern California and Big 8 Conference Champions, Sierra College. The Wolverines finished 10-0 in the conference and 24-2-2 overall.
Despite the struggles, City College was only shut out twice this season. The first came back in September against Mt. San Antonio College, 18-0 at the West Valley Tournament. The second when the Wolverines defeated the Panthers 15-0 in the second game of the Big 8 Tournament at American River College Nov. 2.
‘We improved tremendously over the course of the season as far as our cohesiveness as a group.”
Hansen also credited freshman goalie Lily Stafford who came into the season with no experience. “ It was shocking how much of the game she didn’t know and we struggled in that position early on and most of the season. Hanson said Stafford is now getting to the point where she’s learning how the position works.
Despite the poor season, Hanson said the team remained positive and wasn’t too down on themselves. “The times they do get frustrated are the games they know they can be more competitive in,” said Hanson.
City Colleges only two wins of the season came against two teams from the Coast-North Conference, Cabrillo College (1-6 in the conference, 1-14 overall) and City College of San Francisco (4-6, 5-11).
