The City College Associated Student Body Senate will vote on a recall of Los Rios Student Trustee Cameron Weaver at the Oct. 21 Senate meeting after a recent effort for an earlier vote was not submitted on time.
Weaver, the student trustee for the four Los Rios colleges, has come under fire recently for his remarks in an interview with the American River Current newspaper. In the interview, he was quoted as being skeptical of the accounts of the Holocaust, among other things.
More specifically, he said that he is hesitant to believe that 6 million Jewish people were killed during the Holocaust. His opinion he said, stems from newspaper reports he found of Jewish genocide from 1915 to 1935.
“I always remember being told that, unfortunately, 6 million Jewish people lost their lives, which is a tragedy,” Weaver said in the 55-minute interview with arcurrent.com. “I was just really confused why newspapers 15 to 20 years prior to that were reporting that 6 million Jews were dying and facing pain and starvation and all of that.
“When World War II [ended] and we come out and say, ‘Yeah, 6 million Jews unfortunately lost their lives.’ That’s just me from a journalistic perspective saying, ‘That don’t make no sense to me. It just doesn’t.’”
Weaver stopped by the City College ASB Student Senate meeting Oct. 14—at which the first vote was to take place—to address the interview and its subsequent coverage, both locally with The Current and nationally with the Associated Press, apologizing for the coverage “casting a negative light on the district.”

Monica Sepulveda, a City College student and former ASB Student Senate member, asked the board to take action on voting for a recall. She said her understanding is that, as a student trustee, Weaver’s beliefs reflect that of the entire student body in the Los Rios district, not just his own.
Weaver has had several chances to apologize for his comments, but has yet to do so, according to Sepulveda. That, along with what was said during his interview with The Current, Sepulveda believes a vote is in order.
“[I want] a recall vote, but based on the fact that it wasn’t just what he said but how he has been acting after he said it,” said Sepulveda.
For Weaver to be recalled from his position, three of the four Los Rios Colleges — Sacramento City, American River, Cosumnes River and Folsom Lake — have to approve the action. So far, only the American River College Student Senate has voted.
According to the The Current, the Student Senate voted 7-2 against the proposed recall of Weaver. The City College Student Senate will have its chance to vote during the Oct. 21 meeting in Room 258 of Rodda North.
