Between work, school and family, finding a balance is often a challenge for community college students. For the student-athlete, adding to the balancing act can make life even more complicated.
The world of college athletics can be a difficult one for students. Student-athletes are forced to deal with often-unrealistic expectations on the court, while dealing with demanding class schedules off it. City College athletes are currently required to maintain a 2.0 GPA overall while taking a full-time schedule of 12 units, on top of daily practice and games.
“Being a student athlete, it takes a lot of work. It’s not easy,” said City College women’s basketball head coach Devin Engebretsen.
City College’s women’s basketball team ended the season on a four-game losing streak. A win in just one of those games would have earned them a spot in the playoffs. With that ending, it’s easy to call the season a failure.
But what is often overlooked is that these athletes are students first. To assess a team based on athletic performance alone is often unfair. This season’s women’s basketball team, after showing potential with some big wins early, went on to a mediocre 10-17 record.
But off the court, the Panthers excelled. With six team members making the City College academic honor roll and one being selected to the Big 8 Conference all-academic team, it’s hard to call the season unsuccessful, despite on-court disappointment.
Sophomore guard Aimee Munar was named an academic all-conference selection, an honor that requires a 3.0 GPA over the course of a two year athletic career.

Panthers’ Ash Monk, Kendra Snowden, Catie Thompson, Alexis Camp and Rayelle Ross were also recognized for their achievements in the classroom as each was named to the City College academic honor roll.
“Basketball helps take your mind off [school],” said Thompson who earned a 3.7 GPA last semester. “Basketball kind of gives you a reason [to do well in class].”
According to a 2010 study at Michigan State University, students who participate in athletics achieve on average a GPA that is .20 higher than students who do not compete in athletics.
“The students who performed better academically in this study were the most active, meaning those who participated in a sport or other vigorous activity at least three times a week,” said Michigan State professor Jim Pivarnik in the Journal of Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise.
That appears to be true for the women’s basketball team. In addition to individual successes, the Panthers team GPA this season was 2.71, up significantly from last season’s 2.10 GPA.
It’s easy to focus on a player’s athletic performance, but it is equally important to consider academic performances. Taking that into consideration, this season’s women’s basketball team is not lacking in its accomplishments.
