Commentary: To donate or to ovulate? Easy money not worth risky procedure

In our current socioeconomic situation, it is safe to say that many of us at City College are looking for an easy way to make a guaranteed dollar, if not a few thousand. But it is very important to consider your safety whenever you are introduced to a new “get rich quick” scheme.

Ever since the early 1980s, a viable option for women seeking short-term, financial gain has been the donation of their ovum, or “eggs.” In fact, some private parties offer donors as much as $30,000, although the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, or ASRM, believes that the reasonable compensation for a donor’s efforts is between $3,000 and $4,000.

A few thousand dollars may seem a worthy endeavor to a young woman paying her way through college, or keeping up with bills in general, but before anyone sees ovum donation as a potential financial opportunity she should understand the complete ramifications for such a procedure.

According to the ASRM, approximately 1 percent of donors are hospitalized due to complications. A single percent may be an easy number to dismiss, but if you consider the estimated 47,000 live births that have resulted from egg donation since 1984, a single percent becomes a group of 470 potentially
hospitalized women.

The first step in becoming a donor, after being evaluated, is being injected with hormones that stimulate the production of multiple eggs (usually 10-15). According to the Textbook of Assisted Reproductive Techniques, these hormones can cause short-term complications such as ovarian hyper stimulation syndrome (OHSS) and, rarely, liver failure.

The long-term effects of ovum donation have not been thoroughly studied, but evidence from health.usnews.com points to an increased risk of early onset of menopause, ovarian cancer, and negative effects on fertility.

A study published in 2008 by the ASRM found that an alarming 20 percent of donors did not recall being aware of any negative side effects, which does not necessarily mean they were uninformed. It could mean that they had financial needs that outweighed their concern for such risks. A survey of 80 American donors found that 45 percent had made their first donation as students, and received an average of $4,000 for their contributions.

It should not be so easy to disregard such serious, short-term side effects, let alone the lack of knowledge about the long-term effects. As hard as it may be to find a job these days, young women should not see something as dangerously invasive as donating
their ovum as a financial opportunity. Young women should not see something as dangerously invasive as donating their ovum as a financial opportunity.
