While spring break images on television depict college students cavorting about sunny beaches, drinking cold beer and randomly hooking up with virtual strangers, students at City College are bucking this so-called trend and looking for more productive options during the break.

Most students do not have the money to travel and party during spring break.  According to Jessica Dunn, City College biology major, she is annoyed with the MTV spring break scene, because it is excessive, and nobody can afford it right now.

“Most of us are just trying to get by,” Dunn said.

Many students at four-year universities party excessively because of a sense of invulnerability, according to sociology Professor Angela Block. According to Block, most City College students are working-class citizens who have a lot more to lose if they partake in risky behavior.

“Life is too short to be partying,” said Aaron More, City College music major.

Because of the economic stress most students are under, spring break is a much-needed opportunity to maximize their work hours.  Abigail Lopez, dental hygienist, said she likes to party, but she is giving that up to work more because she really needs the money.

Spring break also serves as a short pause from school that allows students to organize themselves and prepare for the last — and sometimes most stressful — part of the semester.

Amanda Morse, administration of justice major, needs that week to catch up on schoolwork, so she is taking some time off work during spring break.

Students have voiced a concern this year that there are not enough classes offered at City College. Many attend multiple colleges to get all the classes they need, and the hectic schedule that comes with that option, can conflict with spring break plans.

Art major Tiffany Lopes is attending three different institutions, including City College.  Her schools all break at different times, so will not even get a break from school.

“I feel like people can have just as much fun and not spend as much money by staying around here,” said English major David Cundiff. “Especially in our economy, we can’t really afford that kind of stuff.”
