City College’s goal is to ensure a safe learning environment for everybody and will remain closed through the upcoming 2021 spring semester, continuing remote instruction that has been in effect since March, according to City College Public Information Officer Kaitlyn Collignon.

An email sent to all LRCSD students announced that campuses will remain closed, co-signed by presidents from all Los Rios campuses. The decision was made as a precautionary measure to continue to prevent the spread of COVID-19, with limited exceptions, according to a Sept. 16 email from Los Rios Community College District Chancellor Brian King.

“Programs that will remain available on campus will be incredibly limited and mostly first responder programs,” said Collignon.

In May, as City College Vice President of Instruction Albert Garcia planned for all-online summer classes, he said the administration was strategizing for the fall semester in the face of unexpected district-wide budget cuts. At the time, Garcia expressed that he didn’t know what the spring 2021 semester would look like.

“Really we don’t know,” he said. “It’s a challenge to plan that far ahead. We’re not close enough yet to predict where we are gonna be.”

As the fall semester progresses, held almost exclusively online, students and staff at all Los Rios colleges continue to face new challenges.

“It’s affecting me tremendously,” said general science major student from American River College Raymond Quitugua in response to a poll. “Online classes are beneficial to an extent, but the struggle is real.”

Collignon stressed that in times of uncertainty, City College is committed to providing a safe and healthy learning environment.. According to King’s email, official announcements about summer and fall 2021 instruction will be made at the beginning of 2021.

“The goal is to make an announcement in the new year for what summer or spring will look like,” Collignon said. “We are hoping to have a better idea then.”
