City College is a community of around 25,000, only a couple thousand shy from the population of Monterey. Our diverse community of cultures gives our campus a unique quality not found in most colleges. Therefore, it comes as no surprise to learn the tragic earthquake that struck Haiti hits closer to home than we thought.
City College’s Reggie Jean-Gilles, International Student Center counselor, has parents in Port Au Prince, where much of the devastation occurred. According to Jean-Gilles, both his parents survived the earthquake, which measured at 7.0 in magnitude.
Although the country of Haiti is thousands of miles away from all of us at City College, our small community has come together to show its support by donating to the Soles 4 Souls project held in the library and auditorium. Many students and faculty showed up to donate their new or gently used shoes to help those in need across the globe. Although our community is small in numbers, City College donated 1,200 pairs of shoes to the Soles 4 Souls project in only two days.

With the start of a new semester, we as students and faculty should really continue to express appreciation to one another for being part of a community of caring and educated individuals. Let’s keep the helping-hand attitude going this semester and start by helping each other. Showing any small act of kindness can really turn one’s day around. A woman saw me struggling, got out of her car and asked me to take hers because she was done with class for the day.
I was really overwhelmed by the small act of kindness and to know I attend a college where students choose to do the little things, really put an extra pep in my step as I hustled my way to class that afternoon. This semester we have a fresh start, so let’s try to pay it forward this year, even if it’s as small as giving your $1 daily parking pass to a student having trouble with a wrinkled George Washington.
