Custodio takes 12th place, shoots season-best at state
The City College women’s golf team was short-handed this year with only four golfers.
Although the Panthers were at a disadvantage in numbers compared to other conference teams, they were still able to compete for the fourth team spot in the Big 8 Conference with all four women advancing to the Northern Calfifornia Championships.
Arrianna Custodio, Riley Krum, Gabriella Herrera and Yunique Williams all made it to the Northern California Championships, but only two golfers (Custodio and Krum) advanced to play in the California State Championships at Morro Bay.
In the regionals, Williams shot a 106 on both days of the tournament, finishing at 212–while Herrera shot a 95 on the first day and 96 on the second day for a total score of 191. Riley came in second on the team, shooting 88-91 for a total score of 179. On the first day, Custodio was one shot off from tying her season-best (at that point) of 80 as she shot an 81. She followed up on day two shooting an 83 and totaled 164 to lead her team.
“I had a pretty good season,” said Custodio, who finished the season at third place in the Big 8 Conference. “I know I made it (to state), and I didn’t think I would be able to be top 10, so I was just mainly there to have fun, and on the first day, I actually shot my best round ever.

Custodio complimented her team on their improvement during each tournament.“Throughout the season they definitely improved and shot their lowest when it counted the most, so I’m proud of them.”
She also credited head coach Michael Thomas for his positivity. “He knew I was more advanced,” Custodio said. “(So) he didn’t really focus on my swing, he focused more on my mental game by pushing me–knowing I could play well on the course.
“He was just so supportive of all of us by always being there and bringing snacks and drinks,” Custodio said as she laughed.
