City College wrestling wins eighth straight Big 8 Conference championship
The City College wrestling team finished 4-0 in the Big 8 and capped off the perfect conference season with a lopsided performance against Sierra College Wednesday evening. In the process of the team’s 42-9 victory, the Panthers were able to capture their eighth straight Big 8 championship.
“It means our coaches are doing a good job, and it means our wrestlers are doing a good job,” said City College Head Coach David Pacheco about winning the Big 8.
City College fell behind early in the opening matchup when Gavin Sweeney of Sierra College defeated Thoai Dat (by pin) in the 125-pound weight class. After that, the Panthers went on to win the next eight matches and finished 8-2, including dropping the final match. In the final matchup, Eddie Zamora (285) was defeated by Sebastian Brynda 4-2.
“Our strength is in the middle,” said Pacheco referring to the team’s eight-match winning streak.
“Our guys in the middle went after it for the takedown; they went after it for the pin. They didn’t just mess around. They wanted to finish the match early and hard to get a pin.”
The Wolverines forfeited three matches to the Panthers. Brian Galeno (141), Michael Mello (149) and Abel Garcia (174) all scored 6 points for their teams by way of forfeit.

“It’s always great to win,” said Ryun Ortiz (133), who got the first victory of the night when he defeated Carlos Perez. “It’s amazing being out here with the team and showing all of our hard work we’ve put in from the practice room, and we came out here and conquered and dominated.”
Ortiz said the eight consecutive Big Championship showed dominance as a team and as individuals wrestlers. “We just put lots of points on the scoreboard—going out there doing what we love and having fun doing it.
This Saturday, Nov. 10, the Panthers will host the Sac City Multi Duals in what will be the team’s final home meet of the season at 10 a.m. in the North Gym.
