There is still hope for a bowl game as Panthers lose 27-24 to Modesto Pirates

The City College football team had a chance to beat an opponent with a winning record for the first time this season—and came up short.

The Panthers traveled Nov. 3 to the Modesto to take on the 6-3 Pirates, and lost 27-24, falling to four wins and five losses for the season.

“We fought and played with great effort the entire game,” said quarterback Jayden Machado, who finished the game with his second lowest number of passing yards of the season, 229.

“It just came down to a possession and that decided the game.” he said.

Machado threw two touchdowns, and the Panthers failed to convert on a fourth and inches while on the Pirates’ 35-yard line. Modesto then got the ball back for a kneel down and with the win they remained in sole possession of second place behind Fresno City College (4-1 in conference, 7-2 overall).

The Panthers tied the score 24-24 when Machado connected with leading receiver Ruben Lee on a pass play that went for a 34-yard touchdown. Lee finished the game with six catches, 151 yards and two touchdowns. His first touchdown was the first score of the game on a drive that took nine plays and 60 yards.

After Modesto trailed 10-3 at halftime, they were able to tie the score late in the third quarter when Devan Bass ran the ball in from 2 yards for a touchdown. Bass finished the game with 17 carries for 110 yards.

The Pirates took a 17-10 lead early in the fourth quarter and never trailed in the game again. They ran for 230 yards against the Panthers defense, which marked the third time this season City College allowed an opponent to run for well over 200 yards. The other two came against Sierra and Fresno City College, and both of those games were also close losses.

The Panthers recovered in the fourth quarter when running back Trey Bussey ran for 225 yards on 38 carries, his touchdown tied the score 17-17.

The Pirates, however, moved ahead after orchestrating a drive that took 13 plays and 56 yards, shaving 5 minutes and 17 seconds off the clock in the fourth quarter.

With the loss, the Panthers dropped to 0-5 on the season against teams with a winning record. The Panthers will play what could be their final game at home against College of the Sequoias (1-3, 2-7). City College will have to defeat the Giants and hope that Chabot College (1-3, 5-4) loses to Laney College (3-1, 7-2) to possibly be voted in to play a bowl game.

Machado said the emphasis going into the game against Sequoias is on finishing strong and everyone doing their job.

“For this game, I just want everyone to progress as much as they possibly can and get the best possibilities they can at the end of the year,” he said.
