RAVE alert sent to students; third incident of racist graffiti found at City College

For the third time since Oct. 1, threatening and racist graffiti was found at City College Monday, Nov. 15, in a women’s bathroom stall on the first floor of the Business building, according to a RAVE alert sent out by the Los Rios Police Department.

The threatening and racist language found in the women’s restroom today is unacceptable,” City College President Michael Gutierrez said in a Nov. 15 email sent to students, faculty and staff about three hours after the graffiti was found. “It is critical that we stand strong against hate and work together to make our campus a safe, equitable environment where students can thrive.”

The hate graffiti was reported about noon Monday to campus police before a custodian cleaned it up, according to City College Operations Technician Karen Chewning. The situation is currently under investigation by Los Rios Police Department, she said.

“We get on these things immediately,” said Chewning. “We don’t like any of that stuff propagated on the campus. We are adamantly opposed to any kind of hate crime here or anywhere.”

City College administration had been criticized over delayed alerts in relation to the initial hate crime Oct. 1, but efforts to quickly notify students have been led by Los Rios Police and City College Public Information Officer Kaitlyn MacGregor.

“With what we discussed in making communication more timely, we sent out an email to students to let them know there has been another incident on campus,” said MacGregor. “We are going to continue to look into it, and we encourage anyone who may know anything about any of the incidents to come forward and talk to Los Rios police or anyone on the administration.”

City College Dean of Business Dr. Deborah Saks reported the incident shortly after noon to MacGregor’s office and said she looks forward to discussions to be had between Gutierrez and the student body.

“I hate seeing it on our campus, and I definitely don’t want it in my building,” said Saks. “It’s cowardly of them to hide and write that in the bathroom stalls.”
