Jayden Machado scored four total touchdowns, Alema Taamu recorded four sacks, and the City College football team won by their biggest margin of the season at West Hills Coalinga Oct. 12 when Panthers defeated the Falcons 42-20.

The game was the National Valley Conference opener for both teams’.

The Panthers scored the first 28 points of the game. Tyrone Roper got the team on the board first when he ran in for a two-yard score. Roper finished the game with 86 yards on 16 carries and two rushing touchdowns

.“We try and split our seasons into two seasons,” said Coach Dannie Walker. “This is our second season.”

Walker said he sees this conference opener as an opportunity to regroup and take advantage of things that the team may have missed in the first five games.

“I think just based on our growth and experience we received in the first season, it’ll carry out to the second season,” Walker said.

Machado threw two touchdowns and ran for one in the first half. The Panthers led 28-7 at the half and did not let up in the second half. Machado’s three touchdowns were spread across the field to three different receivers.

Coming into the game, Machado was completing just 51 percent of his passes, but he  completed 64 percent against West Hills, going 18-for-28.

During a  Sept. 29 game against Sierra College, the Wolverines  ran for 254 yards against the City College defense. The defense fixed those holes during the bye week, allowing West Hills just 19 yards on the ground.

Taamu brought his sack total to a conference-leading 7.5 by bringing Falcons quarterback Jamal Salaam down four times.

“It’s all won in practice,” said Taamu, who also finished the game with team-high nine tackles. “We had a good week of practice and preparation leading up to the game.”

Taamu said that he believed his ability to get the quarterback in the game was due to frustrating the Falcons o-line in the early on.

“It just came easy as the game went on because they were already frustrated because we came crashing down on them early and took away their confidence,” he added.

With the win, the Panthers moved to 3-3 for the season and will face Fresno City College (4-2, 1-0 in National Valley) at home Oct. 20. The Rams are coming off a 49-3 home win against San Joaquin Delta College.
