Gearing Up: The Panthers looks to take the reigns in conference play

The City College football team responded with two consecutive victories after a 0-2 start. The Panthers got its first win of the season at Diablo Valley College Sept. 14 when they defeated the Vikings 36-7. The success would continue the following week when Shasta College came into Hugh Stadium. After going into halftime tied at 14-14, City College outscored the Knights 26-13 in the second half.

In its final non-conference game of the season on Sept. 29, the Panthers comeback attempt against Sierra College came up short in a 38-30 defeat. The Panthers trailed the Wolverines 21-7 and then 28-10 before finally taking a 30-28 lead with 13:31 seconds remaining in the third quarter.

Jayden Machado connected with Roy Sanders on a 45-yard touchdown, on a drive that took five plays, 80 yards and 1:23. Machado completed 14 of 35 passes for 219 yards with two touchdowns and was intercepted twice by the Knights defense. With five seconds remaining in the game, the Panthers were down eight and the had the ball on Sierra’s 28. Coming out of a timeout, Machado had his pass picked off by William Brocchini for the second time and sealed the game for the Knights.

“We failed mentally.” Machado said, on the team’s lost to the Knights. “I truly believe we were the better team on both sides of the ball. They wanted it more than us and they were willing to dig deeper than we did.

Receiver Ruben Lee accumulated a total of 254 yards in both the kick return and receiving. Lee caught six balls for 121 yards and a touchdown. His touchdown came in the second quarter when he caught a 62-yard pass from Machado. After the Knights went up 14-0, Lee would give the Panthers its first score of the game early in the second quarter–Lee scored on a 98-yard kick return.

The Panthers defense had trouble all game stopping Sierra’s run. Ryan Graham carried the ball 22 times for 241 yards and three touchdowns. Graham’s longest run of the evening came in the second quarter when he gashed the Panthers defense for a 72-yard run and score.

The Panthers will have a bye week before returning Oct. 12 to take on West Hills Coalinga (2-3) with both teams playing for a chance to get to .500 on the season.

Machado said for he and his team, he is looking for consistency and looking to control the ball more in the games. He also spoke of the team’s confidence saying, “I think we’re we’re very very confident. We all know all know what we’re capable of–we haven’t tapped our potential yet. We believe we can win these next five games. Get into the playoffs and have a shot”.
