Unable to capitalize; Taamu, Panthers defense force five turnovers in loss to San Francisco

The City College football team forced five turnovers and led early before falling to City College of San Francisco 37-29 in their home opener Sept. 7.

The Panthers recovered four Rams fumbles in the first quarter and did so in the span of 7:07 seconds. However, they only led 14-0 after getting four takeaways, and the Rams took a 23-21 lead into halftime.

After safety Brandon Wright recovered the first fumble, the offense got the ball into the end zone two plays later. Tre Bussey, who finished the game with 12 rushes and 46 yards, scored on a 5-yard run. The Panthers missed a 44-yard field goal after recovering the second fumble.

Cameron Davis recovered the third fumble and receiver Reuben Lee got into the end zone for a 15-yard rushing score. Lee also had a eight receptions for 166 yards and caught the touchdown that brought his team to within one score late in the game.

“My guys fought hard,” Head Coach Dannie Walker said of his team’s performance. “We’re close and we’re right there. We just have to get someone to kick that door down and get in. Once they do that, it could be special.”

City College recorded its fifth and final turnover of the game when defensive lineman and sophomore Alema Taamu intercepted Rams quarterback Jack Newman in the third quarter. However, the drive stalled after nine plays and 26 yards. The Panthers were flagged with two false starts penalties and were forced to punt the ball away.

The Panthers got the score to 37-29 after a drive that took 5 plays and 51 seconds. Quarterback Jayden Machado completed a 12-yard touchdown to Lee, with 3:44 remaining in the game.

Despite the 0-2 start, Walker said his team is excited and optimistic about where his team is and believes the key is for them to stay on pace and not deviate from where they are.

“They’ve done some really good things and they have to feel good about themselves and take these L’s as lessons for their future,” Walker said.

The Panthers  next game will be Sept. 14, in Pleasant Hills when they take on the Diablo Valley College Vikings, who are so far 1-1 this season.
