Beginning Oct. 1, Los Rios will be enforcing new policies concerning assessment for all colleges in the district, including tests for English, reading, math and other subjects.

These new policies will affect procedures students must go through for how, when and whether a student is able to retest.

Some details of the new guidelines include:

  1. Assessment is only for placement in a course. Students who begin a course sequence will be directed to the appropriate school department to complete the proper procedure. This also applies to students who have already started a college course without going through the assessment process.
  1. Students unsatisfied with test results, may retest once after waiting 30 days.
  1. The results of an assessment test will be valid for two years. The one exception applies to students who tested before Feb. 16, 2013. The student’s results will be valid for three years following the test.
  2. Is it acid reflux, or bile reflux? 1. If a student’s test results are expired. he or she may take the assessment test again if he or she hasn’t already begun the course sequence. Should the student begin the course sequence he or she can use the campus’ relevant course challenge process.

The incorporation of a district-wide set of regulations is a first for the Los Rios Community College District, which has four colleges: City College, American River College, Cosumnes River College and Folsom College…

“Before this, it was each campus had a different retest policy, but now it’s going to be uniform,” said assessment testing supervisor Sherri Goldberg.

Because of the new rule that states a student must wait 30 days before he or she can retest, Goldberg advises students do more to make sure they pass the first time around.

“We strongly recommend they study before they retest to get a higher placement if that’s what they want.,” said Goldberg
