City College and the surrounding areas lost power Feb. 6 shortly after 9 a.m.

About 34,000 SMUD customers were without power Feb. 6, according to the Sacramento Bee. SMUD Spokesman Chris Capra said the bulk of the outages were likely caused by lightning striking two substations, also according to the Bee.

Text message alerts and emails were sent to notify students of the outage. The main campus was closed at 2 p.m. and was set to reopen Saturday morning, except for the Learning Resource Center.

According to IT dean Elaine Ader in an email on Feb. 6, the outage damaged a core switch that is essential for computer and telephone operations on campus.

The Los Rios Police Department issued a warning to students and staff that the dispatch center might not be operational due to the outage. As a precaution, LRPD asked those in an emergency situation to call 911.

Phone lines were restored to the dispatch center as of 7 p.m. Feb. 6.  “Los Rios students, staff and faculty can now call the Dispatch Center by dialing (916) 691-7393 to report on-campus emergencies. This is a temporary measure until regular phone service to the dispatch center can be restored,” said the LRPD in an email sent Feb. 6.

An email Feb. 8 from Ader updated faculty and staff that the network has been fixed, and there should be normal for classes Monday, Feb. 9, though rebooting computers has been recommended.
