The City College Express newspaper and saccityexpress.com took home eight awards—including one of only nine statewide awards for online excellence—at the annual Journalism Association of Community Colleges state convention April 11-14 in Sacramento.

“I had the opportunity to provide input on the design and planning for the new version of the website during the spring of 2012,” said Daniel Wilson, current Express editor-in-chief and online managing editor of the Express in fall 2012.

Other statewide awards for the Express included two first-place awards: for an editorial, “The price is never right” by the editors of the print newspaper about the rising cost of textbooks and for an online photo by J.D. Villaneuva, “Jerry Brown pitches Prop. 30.”

Reporter Claire Sullivan also won a second-place award for her opinions story, “The perils of the motorcyclist.” Photographer Dianne Rose took home a second-place plaque for her sports action photo, “Standing tall among giants.”

Two Express students, Cody Drabble and Dianne Rose, won an honorable mention in the on-the-spot team feature competition at the convention for their multimedia presentation of still photographs and audio reporting.

Four students teamed up to take a third-place award in video journalism—Angelo Mabalot, Vincent Fernandez, Kate Paloy and Kim Washington—for their video, “Renovated Sacramento City College Auditorium reopens.”

Designers Matt Matteucci and Vivian Liu garnered a fourth-place award for front-page layout tabloid for their Sept. 25, 2012, cover headlined “Rock out with your vote.”

Nearly 600 students from 50 community colleges attended the JACC convention to participate in the workshops and compete against one another for awards to bring back to their school. JACC is an association of California and Arizona community college journalism programs designed to provide extended educational opportunities for journalism students and instructors.
