City College women’s tennis team is optimistic, thanks to early victories in singles matches, according to coach Dave Griffin.
“This season we have a team with great attitudes and a bunch of girls that really have fun playing,” said Griffin.
Three first-year players are serving up victories for the team. Vanessa Van Der Valk, Ariel Xiong and Nadya Stokes are considered the key players for the season, according to team members.
“I would say we don’t have a top player right now, [but] we have three good players and we will improve,” said Stokes.
Stokes said the team is starting its season with a challenge by facing some of its stronger competitors early on. Teams such as Cosumnes River College and Fresno City College are expected to be the toughest competitors this season, she said.
Griffin agrees.“We are ready to face whatever the next game is,” he said.

“Vanessa won a singles match against CRC, and they are normally a really hard team to play against. We have some good players, but there is room for improvement.”
Compared to last season, the team is off to a good start, said biology major Sasha Toporovskaya and nursing major Kateri Nguyen.
“The team is better. We are a lot better this season,” said Toporovskaya.
Stokes said the good start of the season is reflected in the team’s attitudes. The team is confident, prepared and expects this to be its biggest season, she said, adding that with no injuries so far, the team is gaining strength.
Team members said they attribute the majority of its good start to Griffin.
“We are doing so much better already…we love the coach. He makes tennis fun,” said Erica Estrada, first year player on the team.
