Local group aims for positive change in community

Mobilize.org brings a skillset workshop to City College acting as a resource center for those who want to initiate changes on campus. Matthew Blackburn | [email protected]

Scraps of muffins sprinkled over empty paper plates liter the round tables of the City College Student Center as students sip orange juice. The phrase “Failed Education System” is written in bold eloquent letters.

Although this may sound like an anarchist overturning of the student body, it’s actually a workshop designed and marketed to community colleges with the goal of giving students the tools to make a positive impact on their campuses.

The workshop, which was presented by Mobilize.org on Feb. 10, featured a diverse group of students hailing from 10 different community college campuses in northern California. The students in attendance all shared the common goal of making a difference and the workshop was the first step to reaching their goal.

Program manager of Mobilize.org, Amber Cruz, who handed out pamphlets and elastic bracelets throughout the event, explained that the goal of Mobilize.org is to make change in communities.

Cruz said the student skills workshop is intended to be a resource for college students to network and attain the basic tools to spark change on their campuses.

“They have the passion, they just need the roots,” Hersey says.

First-semester City College student Maria Galvez said the workshop is a good opportunity to meet people on campus.

“I’m going to try and get more involved on campus,” said Galvez. “People want to complain and not take initiative.”
