Around the world with TOMS

My curious eyes wander across the City College campus, but it isn’t the ground I’m looking at—it’s the scattering different colors and patterns of shoes. Two and a half years after purchasing my first pair, TOMS shoes have made its way around City College in just a few years, and now it appears every other student is walking around wearing a pair.

TOMS is a great way to support a for-profit company doing amazing charity through generous customers like City College students, who are improving the lives of many children in need.

In 2006, entrepreneur Blake Mycoskie took a trip to Argentina and witnessed poverty and hazardous health conditions. He noticed children walking around without shoes and so he created TOMS or “Shoes for Tomorrow” according to the TOMS website. TOMS gives a pair of shoes to a child in need after one pair is purchased.

A few weeks before school I received a weekly newsletter from TOMS. On opening the letter I was surprised and touched that their latest stop, in giving away shoes to children in other countries, took place in my country of birth, Honduras. As a native of Honduras I am aware of the poor living conditions among the people and of the help these shoes can provide for their children.

Honduras is a country where education isn’t free and most certainly does not come cheap. With extremely high rates of poverty, parents aren’t able to send their children to school with the proper necessities. TOMS gave a large number of children in San Pedro Sula, Honduras, a pair of black TOMS to help them attend school.

TOMS has been able to promote their education at the same time City College students have contributed to their learning. Business major, Diana Casillas owns five pairs of TOMS and says students are not only just purchasing comfortable and stylish shoes.

“I thought it was pretty neat because it’s not every day when you can actually contribute and it’s a cool way to give back to the world,” said Casillas.

As of September 2010 TOMS has given 1 million pairs of shoes to children 23 countries, according to the TOMS website, and with the start of the fall semester it has been incredible to see the spread of TOMS everywhere.

City College students have become benefactors through their purchase of TOMS.
