Healthcare is an issue few politicians want to touch, especially since Hillary Clinton was publicly torn apart for proposing universal healthcare in the ‘90s. Now, thanks to a rejuvenation of the progressive movement, universal coverage in the U.S. is looking like a possibility, and it’s about time.

The current situation is unacceptable. Healthcare costs are skyrocketing at a rate that puts unreasonable burden on employers who offer health insurance. For the uninsured, something as common as crossing the street or mowing the lawn could mean a financial catastrophe from an exorbitant hospital bill.

We at the Express like President Obama’s proposal to offer a state-run healthcare plan along side the private insurers. It offers a solution for people on both sides of the aisle. If you think that state-run healthcare will take away the choice your insurer provides, stick with your private health insurer. If you are opposed to denying people coverage for preexisting conditions, and delivering medical care based on economic status, go with your government’s health plan.

According to the American Medical Student Association, it would cost $69 billion annually to provide private-insurance level healthcare to the 45 million uninsured Americans. Obama says he will raise the capital needed by rolling back tax cuts on people making more than $250,000 a year.

The benefits to the U.S. implementing this plan are countless. Costs would go down because the government would be able to wield its power to demand lower health care costs from providers and pharmaceutical companies. Plus, the government has no need to make a profit, advertise or keep brokers and people whose job it is to find a reason to deny someone coverage. American labor would become more attractive, because unions wouldn’t need to demand expensive healthcare for all employees, and companies would no longer lose productivity from uninsured employees calling in sick for preventable illnesses.

Healthcare is a necessity to living a dignified life, and if every other industrialized country in the world can do it, the U.S. can too.
