Learning online?

Convenience versus technology

As budget cuts become more prominent across all aspects of campus life, many students find they cannot register for classes necessary to their major. Classes and sections are being cut, and students are forced elsewhere.

Professors are finding themselves underpaid and overstretched. The antidote to this, other than convincing the state to hand over a stimulus plan to the college, is to utilize the online tools offered in our new age of technology. For professors who are already stretched to capacity, online classes may be just another responsibility. It might be a better option for part-time professors who don’t always get to teach because of budgeting or space.

City College English instructor Tom Miner said, “If the department is offering more online sections, then the total number of students being turned away [from standard sections], or trying to add, has increased.”

While some believe that technology is taking over the job that professors spend years studying for, online classes at City College still require a lot of participation from the professor – just not always in person. Not having to worry about time slots for lectures (other than orientation and finals), low class attendance, or scheduling conflicts will allow more professors to continue to teach for the love of teaching, while still being able to support themselves.

As of spring 2007, according to City College’s Distance Learning Center Web site, there were around 100 online classes approved for AA/AS degree requirements.

I take online classes to fulfill requirements and to save time and gas. As hard as it is to force myself to sit down in front of my computer and get the work done, I appreciate working at home, either after school or after work, and learning at my own pace. I can even work late at night if that is when the mood strikes me. But no matter what time I work, professors can squeeze in correcting my work whenever it suits them.
