City College program helps indebted students

Armed with its new slogan and ready to work with any confused or indebted student, the Students Obtaining Success program was stationed throughout City College campus during the first three days of February. The goal was to aid and inform students about how to pay their enrollment fees to avoid being dropped from courses.
All of this was part of S.O.S.’ new campaign, You’ve Got to Pay to Stay.
According to Vice President of Student Services Michael Poindexter, the program helps notify students when they have a bill to pay. It does this through a variety of means, including letters, phone calls, email and classroom announcements. Fliers posted in different academic buildings, announcements on several campus television screens, and even a link on City College’s Web site are also used to remind students.
“We noticed that we needed to tell you [the student] many times that you had a bill and that you had to pay that bill,” Poindexter said. “With this particular program, we have been able to decrease the number of students dropped for non-payment by several hundred.”
According to Kim Goff, Records and Admissions supervisor, the Pay to Stay program has been quite successful over the last three years.
“In the spring semester of 2007, 613 students were dropped for nonpayment,” she said. “Spring 2008 saw 584 students dropped, and in spring 2009, 487 students have been dropped.”

Despite the success that S.O.S. seems to be having, not everyone on campus knows about the program.
Although City College student Abigail Lopez knows S.O.S. stands for, she claimed to still be in the dark as to what the program is actually about.
“[It means] Students Obtaining Success or something like that,” Lopez admitted. “The only reason why I know what it means is because I see the sign all the time inside of Rodda North. I still don’t know what it is though.”
Poindexter said S.O.S plans on carrying out three more events this semester. There are no definitive dates set as of yet.
In the last week of February, S.O.S. will sponsor an event called Stay Until May, which will offer support services and resources to students who may be at risk of being dropped from classes.
In mid-April S.O.S. will carry out What’s Next/Advising Week, when the focus will be on increasing student awareness and enrollment in academic support programs.
S.O.S. will also sponsor Register Now during the first week of May. The event will remind students to register for the summer and fall 2009 semesters and guide them through registration.
