Upon entering through the glass doors of the North Gymnasium, people often run into City College wrestling coach Dave Pacheco, as he makes his way to his next class or practice session, shoulders square and eyebrows furrowed with a determined look.

Pacheco has coached wrestling for a total of 31 seasons—28 of those have been at City College. During his time, he’s coached 55 Academic All-American wrestlers, according to the athletic department’s web site.

“The biggest thing for me is seeing young men challenge themselves and make it to the next level both academically and athletically,” Pacheco said.

While Pacheco’s seemingly no-nonsense appearance—usually gym shorts and a T-shirt—seems to project a tough-guy attitude, the coach’s colleagues and athletes say he puts his students first.

“Dave cares a lot about the wrestling community and he helps out at all grade levels,” wrestling team member and computer science major Antione Green Gibson said. “If there’s one person who knows wrestling, it’s Dave Pacheco.”

In fact, he is more than just drills and whistles.

Before Pacheco started coaching at his alma mater in 1983, the wrestling team had never won a championship.

In 1996, under Pacheco, the wrestling team made history when it competed at the State Wrestling Championship for the fi rst time.

A few years later, the team competed at the 2000 Dual Championship.

The wrestling team has also won nine Conference Titles and three Regional Titles under Pacheco’s coaching.

“Dave is an ambitious and passionate faculty member and coach,” said Mitch Campbell, dean and director of athletics.

According to his athletes, Pacheco’s coaching techniques ensure all of his players succeed in the classroom.

“He always makes sure that we’re studying and he checks up on all our grades,” said wrestling team member Zakkary Ontiveros, undecided major. “He makes sure that we are in all of the right classes, and that we are attending those classes,” Ontiveros said.

Pacheco’s history with City College goes back many years. He took classes at and wrestled for the school’s team before continuing his education at Idaho State University, where he received a bachelor’s degree in physical and special education.

He later earned a master’s of science degree in physical education from California State University, Sacramento.

Pacheco also coached at Idaho State as well as his former high school, Luther Burbank, before returning to City College in ‘83.

Pacheco said he has had his heart set on coaching for as long as he can remember.

“I was told not to go into teaching or coaching because it didn’t pay well,” Pacheco said. “Coaching is one of those things you do for the love of it. If I didn’t love what I do, it wouldn’t be worthwhile,” he said. “I didn’t go into it for the money, I went into it because it’s what I wanted to do.”
