Wrestler keeps tabs on grades and on mat

Isaiah Hurtado, kinesiology major, said he won’t quit pushing forward during a wrestling match, even when he’s losing.
“A lot of guys, if they’re down 14-6, they just shut it off,” head wrestling coach David Pacheco said.

For example, Hurtado was down by eight points in a previous match, one of the worst performances of his season, Pacheco said, and despite losing the first round, the player fi nished the match with a 21-16 victory over his opponent. In the last two rounds, Hurtado outscored his challenger 15-2.

Hurtado’s all-around skills on the mat—from take downs, escapes off the bottom, and turning people from on top—reflect on his No. 2 ranking in the state.
Hurtado brings skills to the wrestling mat like he hits the books.

“I’ve got my academics on lock. I’m doing really good with my classes,” Hurtado said.

Hurtado commutes from both Cosumnes River College and City College throughout the week to maintain the GPA that he needs to wrestle.
Hurtado said he has been wrestling for eight years and this is his first year wrestling for City College.

Previously a student at California State University, San Francisco, for his first year of college-level wrestling, Hurtado said he loved the atmosphere of the city, but came back to his hometown of Sacramento to recoup and settle before making any major moves.

Hurtado said scholarship money was also a factor during the process and plans for moving back to San Francisco are in the future.

“They did offer me a little [money] before, but it wasn’t a lot,” Hurtado said. “That was one of my plans, just to come back to Sac City for a year and then going back to San Francisco State,” he said.
Pacheco said he was very interested in Hurtado before he attended San Francisco State.

And we tried to get him to come here as a freshman. He decided to go to San Francisco State,” Pacheco said.

Hurtado has done nothing but improve over the past three tournaments while wrestling for City College, placing in all three with third, second and then first.

In the short run, Hurtado wants to meet his goal of winning the state championship. However, a bigger goal. Hurtado said, was to catch up to the current No. 1 team in the state, Fresno City College.
“[Fresno City] has been doing really good. They’ve been winning a lot of tournaments, but … Sac City has an impressive squad, and we definitely have the potential to go out there and beat them,”
Hurtado said.

The love Hurtado said he has for wrestling goes deeper than any other sport he’s played. Although he pursued soccer early on, he said, wrestling won him over.
The reason behind this is he said because he loves the individuality of the sport. That individuality, mixed with the combined number of team points really puts the sport ahead of everything else for Hurtado.

“Plus, I was better at wrestling,” he said. Freshman kinesiology major Efren Rodriguez is Hurtado’s wrestling partner. They practice every day together so they’ve grown to recognize how to help
one another improve. Rodriguez said that Hurtado is very polished and swift with his moves. Rodriguez said he’s adapted to that style so it puts his agility at a higher mark. Rodriguez weighs more, at 141 pounds to Hurtado’s 133. Hurtado uses this to his advantage in order to get burly, he said.

“He moves a lot. He’s slick with his moves,” Rodriguez said. “That might be a good part for him because I’m more of a stronger type of wrestler.”

The atmosphere of practice and tournaments wouldn’t be as upbeat if it wasn’t for Hurtado’s attitude, Rodriguez said. Hurtado said that he not only visualizes what he needs to achieve on the mat, but in life as well. He said his mindset will push him through the obstacles, and what he visualizes will prevail.

Hurtado said he understands, too, that in order to accomplish his wrestling objectives, being a student comes first.

“He just has a positive attitude every day…it’s nice to have that kind of wrestler around,” Rodriguez said.
