Wrapping up Panthers’ post season

Many of City College’s spring athletic teams advanced into their postseasons, with most of them concluding after the spring semester ended. Here is a quick recap of how they finished up their seasons.

Baseball
City College’s men’s baseball team competed strongly all year, finishing the year with a final record 21-15, but 15-6 within the Big-8 Conference. The Panthers’ conference record was good enough to earn them the top spot in the Big 8.

Coach Andy McKay’s team went on in the playoffs, eventually losing to San Mateo in the Super Regionals, just one game away from advancing to the state championship bracket.

Men’s Track & Field
The men’s track and field team also had a successful season but fell short of its desired goal. The team finished second in the Big-8 Conference but was able to bounce back two weeks later and win the Nor-Cal Championships.

“We went to Nor-Cals.We won that one pretty heavily. It was pretty fun,” Head Coach Rob Dewar said. “When you lose the conference and then two weeks later you go on to win the Nor-Cal Championship, it’s just fun. The guys that were supposed to do what they do, did.”

At the state championship, the team fought through tough conditions that included 45 mph winds in Lancaster to finish second in the state. No other Nor Cal team finished in the top five.

The team also boasts a couple of individual state champions in Cody Allen in javelin and Ray Nikzat in the high jump.

Women’s Track & Field
The women’s track and field team also finished second in the state championships.
En route to their second place finish in the state championships, the team finished second in the Big-8 Conference
and third in the Nor-Cal Finals.

The women’s team contained a few individual state champions of their own in Susan Jackson in the high jump, and the team of Latasha Spriggs, Samantha Tansil, Ashlee Sampson, and Alisa Jenkins, all winning the 4x100m relay race.

Softball
Head Coach Robert Maglione led his softball team to another successful season, yet the team also fell short of reaching the state championships.

Although they did not get to the state championships, they were able to become co-champions of the Big-8 conference with Sierra College.

“We needed one game on Sunday to advance to the State Championship,” Maglione said. “It was a good day in the fact that there was good softball played, but a bad day for City because we didn’t accomplish what we wanted. We finished 39-6 on the year, so that’s not a bad way to go.”
