City College women’s basketball team lost its third straight Big 8 Conference matchup after losing Jan. 13 to cross-town rival Cosumnes River College in a close 60-56 game.
The Panthers had a chance to tie the game in the final seconds but came up short after the Hawks got their own rebound after a missed free throw and scored. With 10 seconds remaining in the game, Panthers’ freshman guard Jasmine Bernardo attempted a 3-pointer to cut the lead to one, but missed, giving the Hawks the chance to close out the game.
“I think we turned it over too many times, and I think we missed the easy [shots] that were uncontested,” said City College head coach Julia Allender. “I think we relied to heavily on the 3-point line in the second half, and we didn’t rebound the ball.”
Going into halftime, the game was knotted up at 30 apiece. CRC went on a 9-1 run to start the second half, which seemed to make the difference in the game. The Panthers were never able to tie the game or take the lead after the Hawks’ brief run to open the second half.
Turnovers were big on both sides of the court, as both teams had over 30 each. The Hawks ran a full-court press the entire game, which flustered the Panthers at times. However, the Panthers’ defense was no slouch either, and they trapped the Hawks at half court most of the game.

City College’s leading scorers were sophomore forward Erica Foster and freshman forward Aleea Reese with 21 and 13 points, respectively. The Panthers played much tougher and were more consistent this game than they were in their previous loses, according to Allender.
“I thought we played a lot better. I thought we were more competitive than we were in the last two games,” said Allender “I thought every kid that got on the floor tonight — which was everybody — really showed up and cared, which has been our biggest downfall, in my opinion.”
The team has two consecutive away games against Santa Rosa Junior College and Diablo Valley College before returning home Jan. 23 to face Delta College.
