City College women’s basketball team lost 61-47 in the Big 8 Conference opener Jan. 6 to the American River College Beavers.

The Panthers trailed much of the game, and despite attempting a comeback in the last six minutes, they were outscored 35-25 in the second half. City College head coach Julia Allender credits the loss to a lack of intensity on both sides of the ball.

“I think we try and run an endurance race rather than those five player [on the court] playing in the moment,” said Allender. “I think we need to value possessions and understand that [the game] is won and lost on each side of the ball and each possession.”

In the first half, the Panthers kept the game close, draining four 3-pointers and forcing over 10 turnovers. However, they turned the ball over far too many times in the game — 25 total turnovers — and it cost them.

The Beavers held a 26-22 lead at halftime, and that was as close as the game would get.

City College sophomore guard Rayelle Ross led the team with 13 points, three steals and three rebounds. Freshman guard Jasmine Bernardo was second on the team in points with nine.

“I don’t feel like we competed,” said Allender. “We had a lack of intensity. We played hard for the last six or seven minutes of the game. It’s kind of been the story all year.”

The Panthers (3-10) will face cross-town rivals Cosumnes River College Jan. 13 in their next home game.
