Student-run clubs are often designed to bring people together that share common interests, beliefs and goals. One club in particular was built on that but also primarily on academic achievement. Honors Club is their name, and community service is their game.

Recently, the Honors Club hosted the Human Trafficking Forum, which discussed sex slavery and the improper use of illegal immigrants. The Forum was broadcasted online and was available to the general public.

“Our event was a big success, we almost filled up the whole 200 seats,” said Jeff Nakata, co-president of the Honors Club. “We’re also live streaming the event this year versus last year when we weren’t. I know professors that aren’t even involved in our club that were streaming it.”

Nakata, a computer science major, is also working on getting City College on iTunes U. If he is able to get the campus on iTunes U, forums such as the Human Trafficking Forum will be able to be uploaded onto the popular application.

The Honors Club, which is associated with Phi Theta Kappa, the international Honors Society, offers scholarships specific to Phi Theta Kappa.

“Phi Theta Kappa is the sister organization of Phi Beta Kappa which is at the University level, although I hear they’re very different. It’s a very good thing to be involved in,” Nakata said.

Since the club hosts several philanthropic events, their meetings are usually designed to organize their future events.

Everyone works better when it’s not just business as usual,” Nakata said.

Marisa Aniel, a child development major, has been in the Honors Club/Phi Theta Kappa for three semesters and she says that her favorite part of being in the club is the camaraderie between members.

“I wanted to join a group that supports increasing awareness on campus by hosting events aimed towards members of the SCC student body [and surrounding communities] regarding positive causes and/or charities, and critical issues going on in the world today,” Aniel said.

The Honors Club is working with the Psychology Club on a new project that will lead to a forum on the financial crisis that America is going through. They will be focusing on why students leave college before getting their degrees.

“We are going through, the next Great Depression. Beyond that, we’re students. Even in great economic times, students are known to be broke, I think that’s a really important topic,” Nakata said.

In order to join the club, members must be part-time or full-time students at City College. A 3.0 GPA must be maintained and students must be eligible for the class ENGWR 300 or have already completed it.

The club meets on Thursdays from 12 p.m. – 1 p.m. in RN 220. Guests are welcome to attend the meetings and volunteer if they would like.
