West Sacramento satellite campus serves diverse community

One year after the grand opening of City College’s West Sacramento Center, the satellite campus has become a vital part of a thriving area of community service.

Within a two-block radius of City College’s West Sacramento Center, area residents can find West Sacramento’s City Hall, the new Arthur F. Turner Public Library and the new West Sacramento Community Center, which includes a museum, café, black box theater, a child care center and art gallery.

The revitalized area on West Capitol Avenue just east of Jefferson Boulevard also includes a pharmacy and convenience store, a supermarket and numerous restaurants.

The West Sacramento Center is a fully functioning campus offering a wide array of classes, which serve both students from the West Sacramento as well as overflow from other Los Rios schools in Sacramento, according to Debra Luff, dean of the West Sacramento Center.

The center also offers many of the administrative services available at City College’s main campus. According to Luff, the center has “a bookstore that’s open during certain times of the year and a financial aid person who comes out from the main campus to help students with their financial aid.”

One challenge in serving an area like West Sacramento is the diversity of languages spoken in the area. West Sacramento has a particularly large Spanish- and Russian-speaking population.

To help with the language obstacles, the center offers ESL classes to those who need help with their English as well as other services.

“We have Russian and Spanish speakers on staff to try to accommodate those people [who need accommodation],” said Luff.

West Sacramento’s new satellite campus not only serves the West Sacramento community but also attracts many students from Sacramento and the surrounding areas.

“It seems like it’s pretty mixed here. I come from Natomas, and I know a lot of other people come from across the [Sacramento] river, too,” said Julie Chang, a third-semester West Sacramento student. “I came here at first because I couldn’t get a classI wanted at the main campus, then I just kind of stayed. It’s pretty nice.”
