Football:

The Panthers (4-2) came out on top with a 21-20 overtime victory against the Sierra Wolverines (1-5) on Saturday. Oct. 15 in the Centennial Game. The win marked City College’s first National NorCal Conference win this year.

The Panthers overcame three turnovers on the night as they outgained Sierra 355 yards to 238 yards in total offense. Sierra’s missed extra point in overtime ultimately decided the game with a Panther’s victory.

Running back Tyree Hanson had a dominating performance with 213 yards rushing and three touchdowns.

The defense did its job with defensive lineman Josh Johnson leading the team with 10 tackles. Linebacker Deon Drake had eight tackles and a sack. Defensive back Hayden Thornton finished with seven tackles.

City College will travel to American River next Saturday at 4 p.m. and will look to win its third consecutive game and go 5-2 on the season.

Women’s Volleyball:

The City College Panthers (15-1) came out Friday with a 3-0 sweep over the San Jose Delta Mustangs. The Panthers are 15-1 this season and 7-1 in the Big 8. They rallied back from a tough loss on Wednesday, Oct. 12, at Sierra, which ended their 14-game winning streak.

The Panthers’ stand-out performers this match were Keeley Franz, with 20 digs, 18 kills with 42 total attacks. Sam Kepler had 12 kills with 11 digs. AJ Woo had 10 kills, with four digs and 21 total attacks. Kassidy Rauh had 43 assists, five kills, three digs and three block shots. Halee Parnell finished with 15 digs.

The Panthers’ next match will be Wednesday, Oct. 19, at home against Folsom Lake College at 6:30 p.m. They are looking to go 16-1 on the season.

Women’s Golf:

The Panthers finished in third place after hosting the Big 8 Tournament #7 at Bartley Cavanaugh Golf Course.

Hunter Hoag shot her season low (81), while Megan Sturgeon (83) and Hannah Reynoso (90) also shot their season best on their home course. Hannah Peters (86) was one stroke off from tying her season best mark, as well.  

Sierra won its seventh consecutive conference tournament with a 295 score. Modesto finished in front of City College with a 324, while the Panthers ended the day at 338.  Butte (350), Napa Valley (373), San Jose Delta (374), American River (399), and Mendocino (DNF) rounded out the field.

City College travels to Stockton’s Swenson Park next Thursday, Oct. 20, for the Big 8 Tournament #8 hosted by San Joaquin Delta College.

Women’s Cross Country:

The Panthers’ women’s Cross Country team finished in sixth place at the Mt. San Antonio College Invite. The Panthers finished with 181 points.

Haley Grieger was the top-finisher for the Panthers again, coming in 27th place overall, with a time of 19:52.5. Alyssa Ayala finished in 34th place at 20:16.3.  Teammates Clarisa Sandoval and Miranda Raynor finished in 40th place and 41st place, respectively, with times of 20:35.2 and 20:40.3.

The Panthers return to the field on Oct. 28 at the Big 8 Conference Championships at American River College at 2:30 p.m.

Men’s Cross Country:

The Panthers, along with women’s Cross Country, will race again on Oct. 28 at American River College for the Big 8 Conference Championships.

Women’s Soccer:

City College women’s soccer team was unable to stop its losing streak last week. The Panthers lost eight games in a row before taking on Folsom Lake College on the road, and Modesto Junior College at home. On Tuesday, Oct. 11, City College lost to Folsom Lake by a score of 12-0. On Thursday, Oct. 13, they lost to Modesto 6-0. City College now sits with a 0-9 record in conference play, and a 2-13 overall.

The team looks to put an end to its current losing streak in its upcoming games this week. The Panthers will host the Beavers of American River College on Tuesday, Oct. 18, and then travel to play at the Sierra College Wolverines on Friday, Oct. 21. City College has played both teams once this season and failed to win either game.

Women’s Water Polo:

City College women’s water polo snapped its four game losing streak last week against Laney College. The Panthers scored a season high 16 goals in their 16-5 victory on Friday. Before the big win, Sacramento played at Fresno Junior College on Wednesday, Oct. 12, in a match it lost 17-5. The victory Friday against Laney was the first conference win for the Panthers.

The team is in action this week as they host American River College on Wednesday, Oct. 19. The Panthers currently have a 1-4 record in conference play and will look to improve their record against the Beavers. This will be the first time the two schools have met this season.

Wrestling:

City College’s wrestling team had a week filled with winning competitions. On Wednesday, Oct. 12, the Panthers hosted a dual match against the Hornets of CSU, Sacramento, and the Mustangs of Delta College. City College came out victorious in both matches. The team then competed in a 10-team North Duals tournament at Santa Rosa Junior College, in which the Panthers placed second overall behind the winner, Fresno Junior College.

The Panthers will travel to both of their matches this week. First, City College will go to Shasta College on Wednesday, Oct. 19, before competing in the Meathead Movers Invitational on Friday, Oct. 22. Sacramento hopes to defend its state championship.
