The ever-present smell of chlorine fills the air at Hoos Pool as head coach Steve Hanson is preparing to enter his seventh year as the leader of the City College water polo team — a team that has struggled to find an identity at a school known for its bigger sports.

Over the summer, Hanson had an idea: Send out a mass email to bring awareness to the campus, reminding students there is water polo at City College.

“I sent it out because a lot of people don’t know about the team here at Sac City like they know about the other programs, such as football,” said Hanson.

Much like the football team, this year’s water polo roster is shaping up to be young and fresh, as about two-thirds of the team are freshmen. With so many new faces on the team, the experience factor is going to play a role in how the season goes, according to Hanson.

“We have a lot of work to do. There’s not a lot of game experience on the team,” said Hanson. “Game experience is going to be critical.”

With a lack of game experience, and the fierce competition level in the Big 8 Conference, it will be a difficult task for the Panthers to break a skid that dates back several years to the beginning of Hanson’s tenure.

“We haven’t won a game in the conference in seven years,” said Hanson.

But even with so much stacked against them, Hanson believes there are some bright spots to look forward to this season. One is how well the team is gelling together.

“Everyone is getting along well. I’m pleasantly surprised with the team’s chemistry,” said Hanson.

The theme for the water polo team this year is growth and gaining experience, according to Hanson.

“This season is going to be about how well we develop,” said Hanson. “I’m excited, too, about how far we will grow.”
