Veteran television and print journalist Rick Brewer this fall became the campus Communications and Public Information Officer and said, nearing the end of his first semester, that he is proud to be a part of City College.

He added that he hopes that his office — which is in charge of all communications, promotions and marketing of the college, from the president’s office and all institutional portions of the college — will be “hitting all cylinders, that all our communications efforts are the best they can be.”

He said learning the campus is his highest priority.

“I feel like my door is open — I’m approachable,” Brewer said. “And you know, I want to get to know as many people in the City College community as I can.”

Before joining City College, Brewer’s most recent experience includes working as a self-employed communications consultant, as the community relations officer for the Stockton Unified School District and as a reporter for 14 years for the Stockton Record.

An active community volunteer in community theater and with the Stockton Arts Commission, Brewer has also been an adjunct professor for the University of Phoenix where he taught the history of media and writing courses. But as of this fall City College is his primary focus. “This is my full-time gig now,” he said.

A native Californian, Brewer received an Associate of Arts degree in general education from San Joaquin Delta College in 1985 and a Bachelor of Arts in broadcast communications from San Francisco State in 1987. In 2009, he earned a master of arts in Organizational Leadership from Gonzaga University.

After graduating from San Francisco State, Brewer’s journalism career began in Lacrosse, Wisconsin, where he recalled that he made $5.60 an hour as a television news reporter, just enough to cover his rent, but not enough to use the heater.

Of that experience, Brewer recalled with a chuckle, there was “not enough to feed myself. I had $100 to live on.”

As time passed Brewer found his way back to California working as a reporter for the Stockton Record covering sports and news from 1993–2007.

Currently, Brewer lives in Stockton with his wife of 21 years, Kathy, and their two children, Jessica, 14, and Joshua, 9.

During his leisure time, Brewer and his wife Kathy enjoy performing in community theater productions. “We’ve been doing this for the last 20-something years,” he said.

According to Brewer, his kids are very active. His son Joshua is on a pewee hockey team, while daughter Jessica is very involved in track and field. She finished 15th in the nation for the 200-yard hurdles this past summer in the 8th grade division.

“We’re expecting her to do neat things in high school track and field,” he said.

Brewer said he enjoys the people at City College and looks forward to the challenges of his new position. Like at any job, he believes prioritizing will be the most important thing in his new job.

“The challenge of the job is exciting, you know,” said Brewer. “I think the hardest part is getting to know all of the various parts of the puzzle so to speak. You know, the who, what, when, where and why. It just takes a little time to figure out who has the information and what information is the most important at one particular time as opposed to other bits of information.”
