City College’s United Elements Club embraces this ideal in bringing together the talents of every genre of art—spoken word poetry, singing, acting, drawing and writing.
Just recently active, the club’s mission is simple: To gather people from all different artistic backgrounds and unite them under one collective unit in order to fully explore the arts.
“[We’re] a club that focuses on cultivating the passions of artists,” says RJ Lisondra, president of the United Elements Club. “And using that passion to inspire each other in our artistic lives and academic lives.”
At a recent club meeting, before its members convene to discuss club business, there are already a few members going over projects and jamming together. The group is huddled around a table with hip hop and techno music blasting from Lisondra’s laptop. The atmosphere is filled with inspiration and comfort.

The idea was pitched to EOPS counselor and Human Career Development Professor Adam Freas at the end of last spring to start an art movement club.
“It opens all ideas of creativity,” Freas says. “To create a space where people can vibe off of each other and promote the arts itself.”
With only a couple of meetings held, the club is already off to a very artistic start. During the hour meeting, Lisondra talks about his art styles and how he wants to help members express their inner creativity, to unleash the artist inside. Lisondra also hopes that the club will evolve into a community of artists who will inspire each other to such great heights.
“Whether you’re into solidarity or you’re a group person, it’s good to sharpen your [skills] with others, you get a better perspective of yourself and vice versa,” Lisondra says. “There is somewhere that you can come to, where you won’t be judged based on how you carry yourself or how you look, it’s a place of connecting to culture.”
The club meets every Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the Student Center.
