UC’s set record in applications this year

In the era of rising student fees and steep budget cuts in post-secondary education, City College contributed over 300 transfer applications to the University of California’s fall 2010 record-breaking increase in the number of transfer students.

“The positives about this is that UCs have expanded the amount of transfer students that they are admitting,” said Richard Erlich, director of the City College Transfer Center.

According to the Sacramento Bee, during the application period that closed Nov. 30, 2009, a record 134,029 students applied to UCs. City College students have contributed to the record number of applicants, according to Erlich, and have proved to UCs that they are more than capable of completing the coursework and succeeding at the four-year institutions. He also believes UCs will work with the City College students and give priority to transfer students.

According to Susan Wilbur of the UC Office of the President, last year regents decided to admit 500 more transfer students even as they were cutting back on freshman enrollment. Alternately, the budget deficit and cutbacks within the California State University system in response to the 20 percent budget cut in 2009 reduced enrollment by 40,000 students, which meant not admitting any transfer students for spring 2010 and possibly spring 2011.

“Right now they’re giving me much more opportunities than Sac State is giving me,” said Mehdy Kouakou, a student in the nursing program.

According to Erlich, the number of Transfer Agreement Guarantees between City College and the UCs have increased between the numbers of 115-175 to 310 this year. TAGs assure admission to certain UCs for transfer students who meet coursework and grade point average requirements. There are currently seven UCs that are teaming up with City College, from UC Davis to UC San Diego.

Rondu Gantt, a student majoring in rhetoric at City College and transferring after this semester, applied to UC San Diego and UC Santa Cruz.

“I believe that these UCs provide me with a great chance of being accepted,” said Ganatt. “And also obtaining a great education and degree from a strongly recognized institution.”

Whether the motivation is to transfer to a UC because of personal preferences or the deficit of CSUs, there are plenty of options for City College transfer students.

“Now is the time to maximize your opportunities,” Erlich said.
