UC Davis representative explains transfer requirements for SCC students

UC Davis representative explains transfer requirements for SCC students

Many City College students are weeks away from graduating, but questions may still remain for other students on the same path.

“What do I do next? Have I taken the right classes? Is my GPA high enough for admission?”

A UC Davis representative has been at City College every Tuesday this semester to provide information for students interested in applying into the UC system. The last date of the spring semester for this one-on-one transfer advice will be May 10.

Alberto Davalos, a UC Davis representative, explained to students April 26 and May 3 if they are qualified to transfer to UC Davis. He also outlined  the procedure for applying to UC Davis.

“It’s actually just one general UC application.” said Davalo, speaking in the City College Transfer Center. “One of the parts of the application is selecting the UCs the student is applying to. All of the selected schools will then receive all the same information, same personal statements, everything. The UCs don’t see what other schools the student applied for nor do they know what schools accepted the student. Davis won’t turn down the application for one student because they also got into Berkeley.”

Davalos said students will need 60 semester units or 90 quarter units to be accepted into a UC college. These colleges require students to take at least two English composition classes, one math, and four general education. UC Davis has more specific expectations for students, including a recommended GPA of at least 3.2 to 3.4 and other guidelines depending on a student’s major.

“For transfer requirement, the biggest thing UC Davis is looking at is what courses the student has taken and their performance in those courses. It’s mostly about their GPA and performance in those classes. It’s much more straightforward with transfer admission,” explained Davalos.

Students hoping to talk with UC Davis representatives about transferring should fill out the UC transfer admission planner, according to Davalos. This can be found on http://universityofcalifornia.edu/, and lists courses the way they would show up on a transcript.

“That way when a student comes in with questions, we can pull up their academic record, take a look at the courses the student has taken and what else they need to take for their desired major,” Davalos said.

Students can also learn more about UC Davis’ academic majors through http://www.assist.org, according to Davalos.

A different representative, Renelle Green, will visit City College May 10. Green will be in the Transfer Center from 9 a.m. – noon, and from 1 – 2:30 p.m. A prescheduled appointment is preferred.

All the class requirements are listed on the university’s website where majors are selected, https://www.ucdavis.edu/majors.

For more information on transferring to UC Davis, students may contact Renelle Green at [email protected], or Alberto Davalos at [email protected].

In addition, the City College Transfer Center provides information and answers questions about transfer requirements at Rodda North 147. For information on upcoming events, students may visit http://www.scc.losrios.edu/transfercenter/ or call (916) 558-2181.
