The City College swim team is approximately halfway through its season and head coach Steve Hanson credits much of its success to the team’s
spirit.

“I think it’s a fun group of kids; they are getting faster [at] every meet, which means the training that we’re doing is paying off,” said Hanson.

Hanson said the most important aspect about the team is that its members are enjoying themselves and each other’s company.

Still, the team has experienced some minor problems. Hanson said this season’s main struggle is that the team has fewer athletes than in previous seasons. Hanson said that his goal is to reach out to students who already have a passion for swimming and who expect to excel with swimming in the future to make a great team.

Unlike in other sports, swim teams do not build an official game record. Instead, teams measure their success by improved times in competitive races.

“There is no such thing as wins and losses,” Hanson said. “It’s all about the effort you put in.”

Hanson said each athlete on the team is determined to improve his or her personal record.

“They are ranked against how they did against all the other teams,” said Hanson. “Most of our athletes are focused on the Big 8 conference.”

The team’s toughest competitors in the conference are Diablo Valley College, American River College, Sierra College and Santa Rosa College, said Hanson.

“They are going to be tough to beat in point total, but every team has someone who is fast,” said Hanson.

Hanson said the team’s top performers this season are Sheldon Simas, Andrey Shalnev and Jacob Stewart on the men’s team, and Alina Garrido, Lauren Ficerelli and Brittney Wilson for the women’s team. Overall, Hanson
said he sees each member of the team as being “collected” and, most importantly, like a “family.”

Sheldon Simas agrees. He joined the swim team this year and said that, so far, he loves it; he especially likes the atmosphere at the swim meets and practices and says that every time he’s with the team, it feels like family.

Brittney Wilson said she shares the same passion and enjoys being a part of the team.

“I love this year’s team and coach,” said Wilson.
